I am the Senior Core Parent Leader here at CADRE and have established deep roots in the development and growth of this parent-led and founded organization – I’ve been a member since December 2001, and a core leader since 2003. In this role, I lead and organize with South LA parents to understand the importance of their personal development and the human right to participate in their child’s education.

I believe that a parent title does not define the power of parents. I believe parents are born leaders, decision makers, problem solvers — and can lead with their power and voice among and with other parents in our community. While working at CADRE I’ve learned to build solidarity and unity with Black and Brown parent leaders and learned we have many levels of leadership. As I always say, we are sleeping giants. Watch out when we wake up.

I have broken through my own stereotypes, bringing from the dark into the light my fears of communicating with leaders who hold power and authority over decision making in our community. In becoming a leader, I have learned how to role model patience, passion, and persistence. I’m still here at CADRE because I recognize the tools that I’ve received as a parent leader and that it would not be beneficial if I kept those teachings and tools all to myself. Therefore it’s an honor to be part of the CADRE parent movement. I’ve learned from other parents that many of them are willing to become leaders, advocates, and active members of our community. I get a natural high when I see parents experience CADRE and then want to participate in our leadership trainings to tap into the best parent and advocate they can be. The joy it gives me to see them be parent leaders in our community — it truly is a blessing.

I’m an active member in community organizing, parent empowerment, and spiritual leadership. I have spent the last 10 years as a spiritual coach, counselor, pastor, author, and parent leader. I am the founder of Virtuous Women’s Fellowship On The Move. My passion is serving people in every way I can, mentally, spiritually, and physically, that’s what I love to do. I am living my purpose when I am leading and helping people to find their purpose in life and godly gifts, and this includes helping senior citizens to find their voice — it is never too late for them, and I am here for them.

My parents were originally from Bakersfield, California and Little Rock, Arkansas. I was born in 1962 and raised in South Central and Watts, California, am a Fremont High School alum, and still make this community my home. I’m a mother of four to Dajuan, Jesse, Aaron, and Arah, a wife of 31 years, a grandmother of eleven, and auntie to so many nieces and nephews, grand and great grand. One of my earliest childhood memories was the Watts Riots, chaos in the streets, fear and separation of the community, going to Grape Street Elementary School, and playing in the now famous Watts Towers. Living in a single parent home as the sixth child out of ten, our family moved often. I attended various schools across Watts and South Central and graduated from beauty college in 1985 as a single mother. My experiences in these schools as a child and then as a parent gave me the true understanding of what CADRE fights for — the truth, our right to tell it, our right to demand systemic change, and our right to participate in it.
